PC Beats URI 59-50

Nate Watson had 12 points and 7 rebounds in the Friars win.
The Providence College Friars beat in-state rival URI 59-50 on Saturday night at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.

"This was one of those games where you know it was going to be a high-intensity game, I don't know if either team played well offensively, I was really proud of what we did defensively. This was a rock fight, your typical Providence College - URI game. I'm really proud of our guys," said Providence head coach Ed Cooley after the game.

“I want to give the credit to Providence and Ed Cooley, they beat us here tonight. They played harder. We knew what to expect coming into this game, the physicality of this game, and we just didn’t match it,” said URI head coach David Cox in his post-game press conference.

Providence has now won eight of the last nine games in the series, after URI won last season.

The win improves PC to 6-2 on the season, while Rhode Island drops to 3-3.

PC Holds Off URI

After the Friars led by as much as 14, 44-30, in the second half, the Rams cut it to seven, 44-37, on a Cyril Langevine dunk with 12:35 to play.

The Friars would push their lead back up to 11 on back-to-back layups by AJ Reeves and Nate Watson to take a 48-37 lead with 10:53 to go in the game.

The Rams would get back within eight, 49-41 after Cyril Langevine knocked down two free throws with 8:55 to play in the game, but could not get any closer.

Langevine led URI with 18 points and 12 rebounds for his second straight double-double.

The Friars would go on a 7-2 run to take a 56-43 lead with 5:34 to play following two free throws from Alpha Diallo.

Rhode Island would not get closer than eight points the rest of the way.

Providence was led by Reeves, who poured in 15 points in his first PC - URI game.

"You can definitely feel the energy, just leading up to it. I remember watching on TV last year and coming to the game two years ago here. Being a fan in this environment is definitely different than playing, but it's just so much fun," said Reeves after the game.

1st Half of Runs

Leading 12-10 with 14:42 to play in the game, the Friars went on an 11-2 run capped off by two Isaiah Jackson free throws to take a 23-12 lead with 10:29 to play in the game.

Rhode Island would come back with a run of their own, cutting PC’s lead to 27-23 with 4:07 to play after a Fatts Russell jump shot went down.

However, that is as close as they would get as Providence would close the half on a 12-4 run sparked by an Isaiah Jackson three to take a 39-27 lead into the break.

PC shot 57% (4 of 7) from three in the first half, while Rhode Island shot just 14% from beyond the arc.

URI Shooting Struggles Continue

The URI offense continued their struggles in this game.

Rhode Island shot just 29% from the field and 11% from three in the game.

Two games ago, the Rams shot just 35% against Stony Brook at home in a loss.

In URI’s previous road game against College of Charleston, the Rams shot 22% from the field in the first half.

"I don't know the answer to that right now. Prior to the game, I would have said we have two issues, shot selection and lack of trust. Ball was sticking earlier in the season, we weren't trusting the young guys. I'm not sure if that was necessarily the case tonight," said Cox.
