Red Sox manager John Farrell
The Boston Red Sox fell 4-2 to the Kansas City Royals on Monday night, missing out on an opportunity to take over sole possession of first place in the AL East.

Boston was without second baseman Dustin Pedroia, who missed the game after being hit in the back with a pitch on Sunday night. Red Sox manager John Farrell said that an MRI came back negative.

He is expected to be out until Wednesday.

Royals Get to Red Sox Bullpen

With the game tied at 2 in the seventh, Kansas City’s Whit Merrifield hit a bouncing RBI single off Boston reliever Blaine Boyer to give the Royals a 3-2 lead.

The Royals would add an insurance run when Lorenzo Cain blasted an RBI single of his own to give the Royals a 4-2 lead in the inning.

Kansas City previously led 2-0 in the third, before Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a two run home run in the fourth inning.

This was the second straight game in which the Red Sox bullpen gave up multiple runs. Prior to Sunday night, Boston relievers had thrown 26 straight scoreless innings.

Red Sox Missed Chances

Trailing 4-2 in the 8th, the Red Sox had the bases loaded with 2 outs, but catcher Christian Vasquez grounded out to third base to end the inning.

Boston would have another opportunity in the ninth when Andrew Benintendi led off the inning with a triple.

However, the Red Sox were unable to get a run across.

Series Continues
