About Fatality

Police say that on Monday, November 10, shortly before 1 AM, Warwick Police officers were called to respond to the intersection of Post Road at Airport Road for a single-car collision into a traffic signal pole, after which, the car caught fire and "became fully engulfed."

The Warwick fire department responded to the scene and  extinguished the fire, finding one occupant in the driver's seat deceased

According to police, the Warwick Police Accident Reconstruction Team also responded and learned that the vehicle had been traveling westbound on Airport Road at what appeared to be a "high rate of speed," according to a witness, driving across the Post Road intersection, and directly into the traffic signal pole where the vehicle came to rest.

Police say the Accident Reconstruction Team is still actively investigating the fatal collision and is currently withholding the operator's name pending positive identification and notification to the next-of-kin.

"The traffic signals at this intersection will be out of service for much of the day due to extensive damage from the fire. We're asking the public to avoid traveling through this area until the RI Department of Transportation can complete their repairs," said police.

DUI

Police said that on Sunday, November 09 at about 11:39 PM, officers were called to respond to the area of 1073 West Shore Road where it was reported that a red Ford F150 had collided head-on with a gray Toyota  RAV4, injuring two occupants, and then fled the scene.

As officers responded to the scene, they came across a second accident scene involving the same red Ford F150  at the intersection of West Shore Road and Sandy Lane.

The F150 had become disabled after crossing left of center and colliding head-on with Warwick Fire Ladder 3 which had been responding to the first accident scene, said police.

The hit-and-run suspect was identified as 46-year-old Brian Weaver of Warwick.

According to police, Weaver was taken into custody and transported by rescue for treatment of minor lacerations. At the hospital, he  was asked to submit to a blood test for suspicion of DUI, which he refused.

Weaver was subsequently charged with one felony count of Duty to Stop in Accident Resulting in Injury, one count of Driving Under the Influence Blood Alcohol Content Unknown, and was issued violations for Refusal to Submit to a Chemical Test and for Operating Left of Center.

Both occupants of the Toyota RAV4 were transported by rescue for treatment of their injuries which included suspected fractures.

Police say the crew of the ladder truck was not injured.
