Red Sox Roll Royals 8-3, Take Over 1st Place in AL East

Chris Sale picks up 9th win of season
The Boston Red Sox have taken over sole possession of first place in the AL East following their 8-3 win over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night. 

Boston’s win combined with the Yankees loss to the Angels puts the Red Sox in first place in the division for the first time this season. The Yankees have lost seven straight games.

Chris Sale went 8 1/3 innings giving up four hits and three runs while striking out 10 for his 9th win of the season.

The Red Sox improve to 40-31 on the season. 

Red Sox Offense Erupts 

With the game tied at 1 in the fourth inning, the Red Sox offense erupted for four runs to take control of the game. 

The offense got started when Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a leadoff single to right and then scored on a Sam Travis double to left, giving the Red Sox a 2-1 lead. 

Travis and Josh Rutledge would add two runs on a Sandy Leon double to center field to put the Red Sox up 4-1. 

Leon would later score on a Sacrifice fly by Devin Marrero to give Boston a 5-1 lead.

Travis and Marrero were both called up to Boston on Tuesday and were flown via private jet to Kansas City.  

Boston’s offense was not done, they would add three more runs in the top of the sixth inning. 

Chris Young doubled to left to score Leon, before Xander Bogaerts singled to center to score Marrero and Young. 

The Red Sox would go up 8-1 and cruise to the 8-3 win.

The Red Sox and Royals conclude their series on Wednesday, June 21 at 2:15 p.m. 

The pitching matchup is Boston’s Drew Pomeranz against Kansas City’s Ian Kennedy.
