Boston entered the 8th inning with a 4-2 lead with Matt Barnes on the mound.

Barnes walked Jorge Bonifacio and Lorenzo Cain on 12 pitches. Barnes was replaced by Robby Scott.

Scott walked Eric Hosmer on four pitches to load the bases for Salvador Perez.

Perez hit a grand slam on a full count to give the Royals  6-4 lead.

"We uncharacteristically lost the strike zone. For a group that has been so good at not issuing too many walks over the course of the year, we had an inning that got away from us. Matt was up in the zone. He couldn't get the ball down,” said Red Sox manager John Farrell.

The Red Sox got a leadoff double from Jackie Bradley Jr. in the 9th inning, but were not able to get any runs across.
