On Monday, Cedric Huntley with the Institute announced that a 19-year-old woman shot in Pawtucket Sunday night passed after as a result of her injuries, resulting in the city’s second homicide in a matter of days.

“We need to work on solutions — not just short term, but long term,” said McKee, as members of the delegation spoke to their legislative priorities to address violence in Rhode Island — and across the country.

"We can't accept the violence as normal," he added.

According to McKee’s office, the purpose of Monday’s event was to “discuss seeking federal resources and taking action to help prevent gun violence; expanding access to mentoring programs to keep young people out of criminal involvement; and bringing community leaders together to develop strategies to make communities safer.”

McKee’s office did not respond to which specific proposals could have prevented the recent spate of what is believed to be gang-related violence.
