Newport Jazz – Day 1
The Newport Jazz Festival expands to three days this year and Friday’s events focus mainly on the young lions of the Jazz world. Among the many artists performing, you’ll hear a lot of experimentation with hip-hop, country and rock sounds as well as more traditional Jazz from artists like saxophonist Miguel Zenon. Be sure to check out John Zorn’s Massada Marathon, for a blend of Jazz, Classical, World, a Capella and more at 2PM on the Quad Stage. Tickets are still available for today’s events at Fort Adams State Park – price is $47.20 with discounts for children and students.
Don’t Worry - Sunday’s headliner is the great Bobby McFerrin. You’ll be more than happy as McFerrin is joined by a diverse range of Jazz artists including Grammy winning saxophonist David Sanborn, Gary Burton and the incomparable Dr. John. Sunday could be billed as father-son day at NJF, with artists like Ravi Coltrane and The Brubeck Brothers also appearing. The wide range of top notch artists is testament to the stature of the Newport Festival. It’s a “must play” gig for Jazz performers.
Dick Dale at the Ocean Mist
Summer, the beach, surf guitar. All that’s missing from that equation is a Dell’s. Dale is renowned for instrumental songs like “Miserlou,” “Let’s Go Trippin,’” and “Pipeline.” Boston based Girls, Guns, and Glory, a band you don’t want to mess with, opens for Dale. Tickets available here for $27.50 for the 9PM show.
Sleeper Agent and The ‘Mericans at Waterplace Park
The WBRU Summer Concert Series wraps up tonight with an alternative rock show from Sleeper Agent. Folk music has been a presence in Newport since 1959, when the Newport Folk Festival was founded by George Wein. Backed by board members Pete Seeger, Theodore Bikel, Oscar Brand, and Albert Grossman, the Festival became renowned for introducing a number of performers who went on to become major stars, most notably Joan Baez (who appeared as an unannounced guest of Bob Gibson in 1959), and Bob Dylan, whose first Newport appearance, as a guest of Joan Baez in 1963, is generally regarded as his premiere national performance.
