Robert Cray and John Hiatt at the Newport Yachting Center
It's a busy weekend at the Newport Yachting Center where two big shows are scheduled. Saturday night has Blues great Robert Cray with Country Rocker John Hiatt and on Sunday it’s the Progressive Rock band, Yes. GoLocal spoke with Cray about the upcoming show and the state of Blues music today. “We’re losing a lot of the great ones, but there’s a lot of young blood out there too.” He’s excited to be back in Newport where he’s played before, including at the Jazz Festival a couple of times.
Cray, a five time Grammy winner recently released a new album which he describes as “Blues with a little R&B.” In My Soul brings together his smooth vocals mixed with his stellar guitar work. This is a show to check out – tickets start at $29.50. Ed McGuirl opens on the Point Stage at 6PM.
There’s a great local show tonight featuring 6 bands at Fatt Squirrel in Providence. It’s the “Perform at Midday Social” contest sponsored by Midday Records, a local label. Bands include S. Walcott, The Skinny Millionaires, The Dust Ruffles, Escape Pod, Tomorrow & Tomorrow, Brother Ghost, and the Jessica Prouty Band. Tickets are $10, music begins at 7PM.
CSN at PPAC
More classic rock is coming to the Providence Performing Arts Center on Tuesday July 15th when CSN takes the stage. The boys just released an archival live recording of their classic 1974 tour with Neil Young, which has been getting great reviews. They promoted it earlier this week on the Tonight Show. Expect a great show as always. Tickets range from $60-$90 for the 7:30 PM show.
Shawn Colvin at the Narrows Center
Lots going on at the Narrows Center this weekend and beyond. First, folk rocker Shawn Colvin is in town tonight on the heels of her recent tour with Steve Earle. Expect to hear her classics and material from her recent album, All Fall Down. Her show is at 8PM, tickets are $50, $55 day of show. Next Thursday July 17, the Narrows is sponsoring their annual Block-A-Palooza in downtown Fall River. This year, it’s the legendary Buckwheat Zydeco along with Girls, Guns, and Glory. It’s a free event across from the District Court House beginning at 6PM.
Blues at the Beach at Indian Ranch
Finally, Blues fans, check out “Blues on the Beach” this Sunday at Indian Ranch, a classic outdoor venue in Webster, MA. The legendary BB King leads a cavalcade of friends including the Robert Randolph Family Band and Shemekia Copeland. Tickets start at $53 for the 2PM show.
Boston Calling Music Festival is a three-day, two-stage festival featuring some of the biggest and best acts in live music. The event will be one big party with easy access to both stages, food, services and more. All ages are welcome and children under 10 are free.
Presented by the Wormtown Trading Company, the Strange Creek Campout features live music, on-site camping, disc golf, yoga, a holistic village, and the Strangers Helping Strangers Food Drive.

Gathering of the Vibes is an annual music, arts and camping festival now in its 19th year. Vibes has grown into a four-day festival that has featured such world-class talent as Crosby, Stills and Nash; all original members of the Grateful Dead; the Allman Brothers Band; Jane's Addiction; James Brown; the Black Crowes; Buddy Guy; Elvis Costello; George Clinton and P-Funk; Bruce Hornsby; Les Claypool; and many, many more big names, while continuing to showcase extraordinarily talented, young, up-and-coming bands to the 20 thousand people who attend each year.
Folk music has been a presence in Newport since 1959, when the Newport Folk Festival was founded by George Wein. Backed by board members Pete Seeger, Theodore Bikel, Oscar Brand, and Albert Grossman, the Festival became renowned for introducing a number of performers who went on to become major stars, most notably Joan Baez (who appeared as an unannounced guest of Bob Gibson in 1959), and Bob Dylan, whose first Newport appearance, as a guest of Joan Baez in 1963, is generally regarded as his premiere national performance.
Established in 1954, the Newport Jazz Festival begins its 60th year this August, one week after its sister event, the Newport Folk Festival, takes place. The first event was originally billed as "First Annual American Jazz Festival" and featured many notable jazz musicians, including Billie Holiday.
