Darryl Kosciak: 17 to Watch in 2017 in RI

As Providence and Rhode Island continue to look for ways to address the issue of homelessness, the Rhode Island Coalition for the Homeless has a new face at its helm in 2017.

Darryl Kosciak is replacing ten-year veteran Jim Ryczek as Executive Director at the end of 2016, after a national search. Kosciak, is originally from Hopedale, MA, had lived in Greensboro, North Carolina for the past twenty years, where he headed up the city’s Youth First Division for at-risk youth starting in 2002, before becoming the Executive Director for Partners Ending Homelessness (PEH) in 2010.

According to Steven Miller, RICH’s Board President, during Kosciak’s tenure at PEH “the Continuum saw tremendous growth in its capacity and ability to end homelessness - increasing the number of people housed annually by approximately 150%, reducing the length of time to return people to housing by 45%, while increasing the overall permanent housing success rate."

Community leaders in Providence have been working to address the issue of homelessness, panhandling, and social service issues throughout 2016, from Mayor Jorge Elorza putting forth his plan, to former Mayor Joseph Paolino, who galvanized the Downtown Improvement District to take action and support social service agencies.

Look to see the direction that Kosciak and new board chair Miller, of the firm Stephen M. Miller and Associates in Providence, take RICH in 2017.

“No person or family should wonder where they are staying,” said Miller, who has practiced law in Rhode Island for more than three decades. “This is especially true for children, who need the support of a stable environment. We think of giving during the holidays, but homelessness continues to be a year-round problem.”
