Georgia Hollister Isman: 17 to Watch in 2017 in RI

Georgia Hollister Isman
The State Director of the Working Families Party in Rhode Island came off of 2016 claiming big victories — and has not stopped working since.

“Over all we won 7 of 10 races we took on, including important defenses of Rep. Teresa Tanzi and Rep. Kathy Fogarty and winning Susan Donovan’s race in an open seat.  This is an enormous record for our very first election cycle,” said Isman, following the election.

After Trump’s victory, a “Resist Hate RI” group emerged, headed in part by Isman, to be proactive in pushing a progressive, "anti-Trump" agenda — and calling on the state’s elected officials to do the same. The Facebook group has nearly 5,000 members, community forums regularly draw hundreds of Rhode Islanders, and Isman is spearheading efforts as 2017 gets underway.

About a hundred members of the Resist Hate RI community, along with RI Working Families Party, delivered more than 1700 petition signatures to US Senators Reed and Whitehouse. The petition called on the Senators to “Be fierce in your opposition to any and all proposals that will divide, attack, or endanger our communities and our most vulnerable.”

Heading into the 2017 General Assembly session in Rhode Island, a new class of progressives will try and push forth their agenda — the question is, will they succeed?

“We should be very proud of gutsy endorsements we made of champions for working families against much more conservative and powerful opponents. All four of the challengers we endorsed—Jason Knight, Moira Walsh, Jeanine Calkin, and Marcia Ranglin-Vassell-- won their races. All these folks took the fight to their opponents on $15 an hour minimum wage, paid sick days and other working families priorities. The message these victories sends is clear—voters are hungry for bold progressive policy,” said Isman.
