Bogaerts Injured, Red Sox Fall 4-1 to Tampa Bay

Boston Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts was injured in the first inning and left the game as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Red Sox 4-1 on Thursday night.

Bogaert’s was hit by a pitch just above the right wrist by Tampa pitcher Jake Faria.

He stayed int he game to run, but was replaced once the Red Sox took the field by Tzu-Wei Lin.

After the game, the Red Sox said Bogaerts had a right-hand contusion. X-rays were negative.

The Red Sox fall to 49-37 on the season and have now lost two straight games.

Rays Take Over

With the game tied at 1 in the fifth, Tampa’s Peter Bourjos hit a solo home run off Chris Sale to give the Rays a 2-1 lead.

Tampa would add to their lead in the next inning when Wilson Ramos hit a two-run home run to put Tampa Bay up 4-1 in the game. The home run was his third of the season.

Boston pitcher Chris Sale took the loss and is now 11-4 on the season. He went seven innings and struck out 12, while giving up four runs and seven hits.

The Red Sox and Rays continue their series on Friday, July 7 at 7 p.m.

The pitching matchup is Boston’s Drew Pomeranz against Tampa’s Jake Odorizzi.
