PC Unveils Plans for New $37 Million Athletic Center

Providence College unveiled plans for the construction of the Ruane Friar Development Center, a new multi purpose facility that will be attached to Alumni Hall.

"This construction project represents the culmination of investments over the last decade, allowing us to create state of the art facilities for all our athletics teams and helps us to capture Big East and national championships," said Athletic Director Bob Driscoll.

The project will be done in two phases and cost nearly $37.5 million with phase I costing nearly $30 and phase II costing $7.5 million. Phase I construction will begin in Spring of 2016 and is scheduled to be finished by late summer of 2017.

Building Features

The building will be a two story facility that features a two court basketball practice facility, an atrium that spans Alumni Hall and Slavin Center, an athletic training center, offices, a new Friar Athletics Hall of Fame, and a dining room, as well as other infrastructure improvements.

"This is an exciting time for Friar men's basketball and for our entire Athletics Department. We appreciate the generosity of Mike and Liz [Ruane] and all the Friar fans who have made this possible with their support. Having great facilities is imperative in helping the development and growth of our student-athletes," said Friars head men's basketball coach Ed Cooley.

Ruane Family

The project was made possible by Michael Ruane and his wife Elizabeth. Michael is a former PC Board of Trustees Chair, graduating from Providence in 1971 and receiving an honorary degree in 2013.

Ruane is the founding owner, chair, and managing partner of Boston-based TA Realty, one of the largest real estate investment advisory firms in the country.

"We owe much of what Providence College has become, and what it is in the future to Mike, Liz, and the Ruane Family. Through their example and their generosity, they inspire us to strive to be the best, and this facility will help us succeed at the highest level," said Reverend Brian Shanley.

Ruane's name also appears on the Center for Humanities and the Atrium at Concannon Fitness Center.

Friar Athletics

The Friars finished fourth in the country in track and field and are currently ranked number one in men's hockey and number 14 in men's basketball.

Providence is the only school in the country to have programs ranked in both men's hockey and basketball.
