Operation Stand Down: 15 Who Made a Difference in 2015

Veterans’ support group Operation Stand Down was founded in Rhode Island in 1993 to serve as a resource center for homeless and at-risk veteran, and opened a new office in Newport this year to address the need in the community — and brought the issue of veterans’ homelessness to the forefront of the state in 2015.  When another homeless organization declared that the number of homeless veterans was just over 100, Operation Stand Down blasted the assessment — saying that the number was in fact much higher.

“This is an absurd method in that it captures only a snapshot of those homeless during a few hours in an entire year. It relies on individuals to identify themselves as being both homeless and a veteran to people who are often complete strangers approaching them in shelters and on the street,” said Erik Wallin, Esq. the Executive Director of Operation Sand Down Rhode Island.
One veteran who had been homeless — but then helped by Operation Stand Down - shared her story with GoLocal.

"With [welfare], all they did was take away from me, told me that I exceeded the limit for this and that. If it wasn’t for Operation Stand Down, I would have lost custody of my grandson.  They helped me when no one else would," said veteran Cheryl Farias.
