Barbara Cottam: 15 Who Made a Difference in 2015

If improving education is the key to improving Rhode Island’s economy and fate, then business and government veteran Barbara Cottam is playing the pivotal role.

She was appointed to Governor Gina Raimondo to guide the RI Board of Education — an entity that has the consolidated power over all public education in the state. Moreover, is she the Rosetta Stone between the Raimondo Adinistration and Citizens Bank relative to their next step in Rhode Island.

Her experience in government going back to the 1980’s for then-Providence Mayor Joe Paolino to her work as head of communication for Governor Bruce Sundlun gives her the experience of working for leaders who were accomplished at “getting things done.”

For more than 20 years at Citizens Bank she has experienced a range of corporate mergers and restructuring while playing key roles in the company.

Today, Cottam is executive vice president, Rhode Island market executive and head of Corporate Affairs at Citizens Bank.  "She has corporate-wide responsibility for directing government affairs, public affairs, corporate giving and marketing sponsorships throughout the company's commercial and retail banking across the country."

In addition, She serves as chairman of the Citizens Charitable Foundation.

In less than a year as the Chair of the Board of Education she has had to oversee the controversial PARCC tests at the elementary and secondary education level (including the flawed data), the selection of a new President for the Community Colleges and, now, the search for a new President for Rhode Island College.

Moreover, many wonder is she the Rosetta Stone between the Raimondo Adinistration and Citizens Bank relative to their next step in Rhode Island?
