Dorian Murray: 16 Who Made a Difference in 2016

No one may have had more of an impact in 2016 on Rhode Island — and the rest of the world — than 8 year old Dorian Murray.

Murray, who was diagnosed with stage four cancer at the age of four, had wished to become famous -- and in the process inspired people around the globe with his courageous battle. Sports stars, music stars, television celebrities and more all posted photos to Twitter and Facebook using the hashtag #DSTRONG.

GoLocal’s Russ Moore put Murray on the “Hot” list back in January.

“The 8-year-old boy from Westerly who is battling cancer wanted to be known by people on The Great Wall of China, so with the help of his new friend, Patriots superstar Rob Gronkowski, a social media blitz with the hashtag #DStrong began, and it brought his effervescent smile to people all across the world. Dorian's courage, positiveness, and strength while facing adversity should be an inspiration to us all. You might be able to bench press 300 pounds, but you'll never be as tough as #DStrong!” Wrote Moore.

Murray passed away in March. But his legacy continues — both to remember his life, and raise awareness and funds to defeat childhood cancer.

A traveling photo exhibit was launched focusing on Murray called Project 3.8. According to the National Cancer Institute, over 15,000 children ages 0-19 are diagnosed with cancer in the United States each far, yet the amount of research funding that goes to finding a cure for pediatric cancer accounts for just 3.8% of all cancer research dollars.

The Dorian J. Murray Foundation will continue Dorian’s legacy moving forward.
